The 2008 Hillsdale Sigma Chi Jail and Bail Opt-Out List
Admission to the 2008 Hillsdale Sigma Chi Jail and Bail Opt-Out List is now closed, as the deadline of 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008, has passed. This page contains the final list of individuals who are off-limits during the Jail and Bail.
To facilitate the effective administration of the 2008 Hillsdale Sigma Chi Jail and Bail Opt-Out List, no new names will be accepted on the list after 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008. This is done to ensure that the Sigma Chi fraternity has access to the complete list in time for the Jail and Bail proceedings, which shall begin at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 23, 2008.

The Sigma Chi Jail and Bail at Hillsdale College is a fundraiser intended to collect money for the Huntsman Cancer Institute. You are encouraged to find out about the Huntsman Cancer Institute in the course of making a decision about whether to donate to it.
The Jail and Bail is held annually as a part of the Sigma Chi fraternity’s Derby Days events. The 2008 Jail and Bail will take place on Thursday, October 23, 2008. The specific date and times of the Jail and Bail will be announced in the future.
The following are the mechanics of the Jail and Bail. An individual makes a contribution to the Children’s Miracle Network in exchange for the privilege of indicating some other individual(s) whom he/she wishes to be “jailed.” (These shall hereafter be referred to as the “sentenced” individuals.) Sigma Chi members subsequently approach the “sentenced” individuals and request a “ransom” – an immediate payment of some small monetary amount. If the “sentenced” individual does not furnish the indicated “ransom,” he or she is taken to “jail” to await some other individual’s payment of the “ransom” for him or her. Once the specified “ransom” is paid, the “jailed” individual is released.
Past occurrences of the Jail and Bail have evoked mixed reactions on the part of Hillsdale College students. Some have welcomed the event and considered it to be in good fun and for a good cause. Others have expressed concerns regarding coercion of those who were unwilling to participate.
In future administrations of the Jail and Bail, it is essential that both parties have their preferences fulfilled and that unnecessary, costly, and injurious conflict be avoided. Those who enjoy the Jail and Bail should be able to benefit from its proceedings without obstruction. Likewise, those who object to it should be able to remove themselves from said proceedings. It is important for you to recognize in advance that the Jail and Bail will be taking place and to contemplate in advance your personal preferences with respect to it.
In the interests of preserving peace and harmony on the Hillsdale College campus and in enabling the students who enjoy participating in the Jail and Bail as well as those who do not to have their preferences fulfilled, the Sigma Chi fraternity in cooperation with Mr. Gennady Stolyarov II has expressed its willingness to offer the option of non-participation to all individuals who object to the Jail and Bail for any reason. This option can be exercised by means of including oneself in the Sigma Chi Jail and Bail Opt-Out List.
During the Jail and Bail proceedings, it is often difficult to determine whether a given person’s refusal to participate is earnest or whether it is a mere affectation. In order to resolve this difficulty, the reasonable assumption has been made that if an individual has sufficiently strong objections to the Jail and Bail as to express discontentment about participating in it, then that individual’s objections should also be sufficiently strong that he or she would devote the time to submit his or her name for inclusion in a list of persons requesting not to participate in the Jail and Bail.
You are given an ample amount of time to seriously consider the Sigma Chi Jail and Bail and whether you would like to be a potential part of it. If you would like to participate, then no further action is required on your part. You should simply enjoy the experience and/or your contribution(s) to the Children’s Miracle Network. If, however, you would not like to participate in the Jail and Bail for any reason, then you should take the following course of action.
Course of Action for Those Who Choose to Opt Out of the Jail and Bail
1. Send an e-mail to Mr. Gennady Stolyarov II at gennadystolyarovii@yahoo.com, with the title, “I Opt Out of the Sigma Chi Jail and Bail.” Barring extreme technical difficulties, your name will be included in the opt-out list prior to the Jail and Bail. Alternatively, you may solicit Mr. Stolyarov in person for the inclusion of your own name in the opt-out list.
2. You may access the opt-out list via the following URL: http://progressofliberty.today.com/jail-and-bail-opt-out-list. If you do not see your name on the list one week after you submit it, please submit it again to gennadystolyarovii@yahoo.com.
Qualifications and Implications of Submitting Your Name to the Opt-Out List
1. You may only submit your own name in person or electronically. This requirement is in place to prevent individuals from being opted out of the Jail and Bail without their explicit consent. If your friend(s), relation(s), and/or significant other wish to opt out of the Jail and Bail, they must do so at their individual initiatives. A list of names of individuals who wish to opt out of the Jail and Bail may be presented to Mr. Stolyarov, provided that the signatures of these individuals accompany their names and their consent is thereby verified.
2. By submitting your name to the opt-out list, you are opting out of the Jail and Bail in full seriousness. You are not pretending to opt out, playing hard to get, or otherwise signaling a false reluctance.
3. By submitting your name to the opt-out list, you ensure that you will not be required to participate in the Jail and Bail under any circumstances. You will not be taken to “jail,” and you will not be required to make payments in money or in kind to any parties with whom you have not made prior contractual arrangements for doing so.
4. The opt-out list will be circulated among the members of the Sigma Chi fraternity during the course of the Jail and Bail. It will also be posted on the Internet for public access at http://progressofliberty.today.com/jail-and-bail-opt-out-list. There should be no ambiguity about who is or is not immune from the proceedings of the Jail and Bail. Regular efforts will be made to notify students of the existence and implications of the opt-out list so as to ensure that everyone concerned has had adequate opportunity to make an informed decision regarding this matter.
5. Anyone wishing to access the opt-out list and to print out or distribute copies thereof is free to do so. Examples of how this might be used include printing out a personal copy to demonstrate that one belongs to the list, in the event such demonstration is required due to unforeseen contingencies in the course of Jail and Bail proceedings. Moreover, a person seeking to pay for someone to be put in “jail” during the Jail and Bail is encouraged to consult the list in order to see if the individual being considered can in fact be legitimately “jailed.”
6. It is possible to opt out of the opt-out list by soliciting Mr. Stolyarov in person or by sending an e-mail to gennadystolyarovii@yahoo.com, with the title, “I Opt Out of the Opt-Out List for the Sigma Chi Jail and Bail.” By opting out of the opt-out list, an individual renders himself or herself once again fully within the purview of the Jail and Bail proceedings. In the interests of avoiding administrative chaos in the wake of the Jail and Bail, opting out of the opt-out list may only be done at least 48 hours prior to the beginning of the Jail and Bail proceedings.
The Sigma Chi Jail and Bail Opt-Out List
The following is the official list of all individuals who have chosen to opt out of the Sigma Chi Jail and Bail and who have accordingly been recognized by the Sigma Chi fraternity as being immune to the proceedings of said event. This list is liable to change prior to the beginning of the 2008 Jail and Bail as additional individuals request their inclusion or exclusion from the list.
